2. Course Study & Outcome Aims

This programme aims to meet the complex needs of the business sector, by providing appropriately trained, qualified and certified staff at supervisory levels with the requisite knowledge and understanding of organisations from a variety of sectors. You will develop the skills and knowledge to allow you to work across various functions of a business. Upon completion of the course, you will be able to demonstrate innovative thinking coupled with cognitive and intellectual competencies specific to business management and ethical practice.

3. Teaching and Assessment:

You will be allocated a personal tutor on commencement of the course, who will oversee your progression and provide pastoral support as required. In addition to support from your personal tutor, you will receive academic support from module tutors, if required. You can also request additional guidance from HE Academic Support to help them with your studies and gain access to a Personal Learning Coach, if needed.

A variety of summative assessment methods are used across the study programme to enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and skills. You will develop the skills required to present your understanding and research coherently. This could include the following:

  • Presentations

  • Peer reviews
  • Case studies
  • Written assignments.

You will complete an assessment for each module, as a vehicle to assess key and transferable skills and learning outcomes. Assessments are mapped to learning outcomes.

Note: you will only study six modules per year, these will be confirmed at interview, prior to starting the course.

Placement:

At Level 5, you will be expected to undertake a work placement. Ideally, you should organise this yourself, with support from tutors. Completion of a work placement is mandatory, as part of the Work Related Learning module. Gaining a meaningful work experience will be great for your personal development, and preparing for employment within the industry.

7. Entry Requirements:

Entry Criteria

Standard entry criteria:

  • Three GCSEs at a minimum of grade C (4), including maths and English (or Level 2 equivalent)
  • Minimum of 32 UCAS Tariff Points (80 UCAS on previous tariff)
  • Level 3 Accredited Business Qualification
  • An Access to Higher Education course (which includes a business related programme)
  • IELTS score of 5.5

Additional entry criteria: You are still welcome to apply even if you do not possess the standard entry qualifications. Non-standard entry criteria includes the following:

  • Qualifications in non-business management-related areas at Level 3.
  • No Level 3 qualifications but evidence of employer references that can support an application with any relevant working experience.
  • A personal statement.
  • A one-to-one interview.
  • Maths and English skills will be assessed through the application process.

You will not be required to make any compulsory additional purchases, however, it is advised you consider investing in the recommended study materials.

What are the next steps?

You will be invited into the College to attend a one-to-one interview. The interview will last for 30 minutes. Please bring your personal statement and all relevant qualifications or expected results, if you are still completing your full Level 3 qualification.

9. Progression

You could progress to the BA (Hons) Management (top up) degree at CECOS College, to achieve a full honours degree, or study a relevant degree at university.

Alternatively, you could use the knowledge and transferable skills you have gained through your foundation degree to progress your existing career, or as a stepping stone to a career in banking and the financial sectors, human resource management, marketing or consultancy roles. Good business and

Modules at Level 4

BMS406 – Personal and Professional Development 1 – (20 Credits)

This module is devised to help students develop the skills needed to become higher education students. They will also be introduced to models of reflection, so that they can reflect on their personal development in the development of transferable / employability skills they are gaining throughout the course.

BMS409 – Innovation and Enterprise – (20 Credits)

This module has been designed in line with Business Durham and is to aid students developing their innovation, idea generation and enterprise skills. Students will have the opportunity to explore and create innovation plans to aid problem solving. Students will learn about local and famous innovators and entrepreneurs to enable experiential learning opportunities and apply knowledge to practice.

BMS412 – Business Environment – (20 Credits)

This module aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of a modern global business environment.  Students will develop their understanding of how structure and culture supports the achievement of business objectives. Through research students will gain knowledge of internal and external factors that influence the strategic direction of a business as well as a consideration of the factors a business should consider when operating within global markets.

BMS413 – Human Resource Management – (20 Credits)

This module aims to help students understand the different recruitment and selection procedures that operate within business and students will learn how to manage and develop people using a variety of different techniques including motivation and talent management approaches. Students will learn how to use HR systems and processes to ensure that legal requirements are met along with Health and Safety and well-being needs.

BMS403 – Principles of Marketing – (20 Credits)

This module is designed to provide students with an introduction to the key principles of marketing. It will provide students with knowledge concerning how marketing has evolved into what it is today and what underpins marketing philosophy. It will identify the building blocks of marketing, the marketing mix, and identify how these elements can be integrated to enhance the customer relationship within different organisations. Students will be able to assess how organisations segment the market to target specific customer groups.  Finally, students will be asked to develop a marketing plan using previous knowledge from business environment, enabling them to think strategically from a marketing perspective.

BMS411 – Leadership and Management – (20 Credits)

This module aims to help students discover different leadership styles and models and allow them to understand the impact of culture on leadership.  Students will understand how to create an inclusive high-performance work culture and understand development opportunities through using a variety of coaching and mentoring techniques.

BMS501 – Personal and Professional Development 2 – (20 Credits)

This module aims to develop the higher education skills of the students to enable them to undertake research and explore contemporary issues in the business world. Research methodologies will be explored. Critical thinking skills will be examined through application of research techniques and project management skills.

BMS502 – Work Related Learning – (20 Credits)

This module aims to develop and refine student’s employability skills in order that they can maximise their employment potential either with a view to entering the jobs market or by their capacity to progress within their employing organisation and add value to it. The module will require students to undertake a skills audit.  This will require them to compare and contrast the skill sets required of them either in their current work or in the types of jobs they will be seeking with the skills they currently possess, to enable them to address any skills deficiencies.

BMS508 – Entrepreneurship – (20 Credits)

The aim of this module is to provide students with a clear and practical understanding of small businesses start up.  It offers an overview both of entrepreneurs as risk takers in launching new businesses, and as decision makers in the management of successful established businesses. This module enables students to produce a business proposal and related business plan increasing their knowledge and understanding of the skills related to entrepreneurship and the running of a small business.

BMS512 – Business Finance – (20 Credits)

This module aims to help students understand a variety of financial strategies that are used by businesses. Students will learn about budgeting, financial management and accounting and how to present financial reports data and information. Students will have the opportunity to investigate the commercial context of businesses to assess their financial performance over time.

BMS510 – Logistics and Supply Chain Management – (20 Credits) 

The module centres around the growth in globalisation in a business context. This module will inform students of the detailed planning and consideration of supply chain and logistics whilst taking into account PESTLE factors. It will allow students to consider the issues and create solutions based on best practice modules related to effective management of logistics and supply chains.

BMS513 – Principles of International Business – (20 Credits)

This module aims to develop students’ knowledge of international business.  Students will identify the impact globalisation has had on business operations using appropriate data to identify service/organisational improvements and opportunities for growth.
