Summary of Distinctive Features

This course is for the future professionals who can positively address the challenges that health and social care presents. In this 4 years programme, the first year of the study is undertaken at CECOS College London and, once successfully completed, students are then able to progress onto the BSc (Hons) Health & Social Care Three Year programme.

During the course of the study, students will be taught by friendly, knowledgeable, qualified, professional lecturers, who have been employed in either health or social care and are well equipped to help relate the study topics to current policy and practice in the domain. This offers the opportunity to develop core transferable skills and knowledge relevant to health care, social care and public health.

Your learning will help you to develop the knowledge relevant to a productive future in the health and social care sectors.

The Foundation Year in Health and Social Care will help you develop the core transferable skills and knowledge relevant to health care, social care, and public health. You will look at many aspects of Health and Social Care, including life development from birth to older adult, and will consider the influence of external factors such as the environment and policy.

You will develop core skills which are relevant to all Health and Social Care areas, such as record keeping, academic writing and reflective thinking, an understanding of how health and wellness may be measured, learn the use of common measurements of data, and how you can affect the communication of others. To support your development and work-readiness, employability skills as professionalism, effective communication, evaluation of evidence are embedded throughout the Foundation Year with the opportunity to undertake relevant work experience in a Health & Social Care setting.

As part of the BSc programme, students need to undertake a minimum of 70 hours work experience, starting in the Foundation year. Work experience should ideally be undertaken in in a health and social care setting which students have identified for themselves. Where the students cannot identify their own placement, the College will provide support. If a student is already working in a health and social care setting (e.g. Healthcare Assistant etc), then this can count as their work experience and they do not need to look for an additional placement.

Learning, Teaching & Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical sessions and tutorials, which will amount to at least 12 hours per week. When not attending lectures, seminars or other timetabled sessions, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve utilising a range of digital resources including our virtual learning environment; reading journals, articles and books; working on individual and group projects; undertaking research in the library; preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations.

You will be assessed through a variety of different formats, this includes presentations, practical coaching, written assignments and work placement portfolio. Teaching will take place at the CECOS College. Each module normally includes ‘formative’ assessments, for which you receive feedback from your tutor. There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module. This includes a range of coursework assessments, such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations etc. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.

The Health and Social Care Foundation Year is made up of six modules:

Duration And Delivery

The qualification is designed to be delivered over four academic years for full-time study. The qualification is delivered face-to-face, through lectures, tutorials, seminars.

Career Progression

The foundation Year in Health and Social Care is the first year of a four years programme of study. On successful completion of study, the following award: BSc (Hons.) Health and Social Care will be awarded to you.

At the end of the Foundation Year, some students chose to make an application to one of the University’s professional health programmes. Alongside some other essential entry criteria for the professional health courses, the completion of the Foundation Year can often make for a strong application. Courses could include:
